Happenings Unleashed

How cool would it be to have an interactive online Happenings which would give the readers the ability to sign up for programs, ask questions like "would my four year old enjoy this?," or comment on books?

And maybe an online version of Happenings could have a space for "this just in" to publicize tours or programs that didn't make the print deadline. And a space for program photos to which branches could contribute. A space to advertise new Recommended Sites or licensed databases. Interactive=Friendly.

This is a smart idea, especially if Happenings is no longer happening as frequently.

I like the idea of an interactive Happenings! Plus, it could be constructed in such a way that the frame/format could be independent of the content, which would allow us to make it look different depending on the season, too. I can imagine a cheesy Wild West style, or the little-flowers-everywhere for Spring pattern, or something modern with color blocks. It really could be very cool, especially with online signup or links to our other Web 2.0-ey sort of stuff (like the LibraryThing page of system book discussions).

Great idea!

Looking for an example I checked out Hennepin's events site:
http://www.hclib.org/pub/events/AllEventsAction.cfm

It has some of the bells and whistles...

Hennepin County does have a clear and convenient way of registering for an event and emailing info about it.

I like what Montgomery County has done with its Readers’ Café page. Check out the Book Discussion Guide and the Book Club Sets, plus the RSS links to Book Newsletters for different genres.

I agree an interactive Happenings would be great. The pdf version on our website is a bit clunky. Sometimes people just want to know what is happening today at their branch.

It could include podcast examples of storytimes, BIB etc. Would be even better if branches could update their own programs. For example post the Storytime Theme of the Week and maybe include photos from previous programs.
